François Dal – Handmade 2024 – (on stem) δ |
For some time now, I’ve been thinking of reproducing a classic shape popularized by Dunhill, the Zulu (also known as woodstock). Here, I’ve limited myself to the most widespread classic shape, characterized by a certain sobriety, not excess or extravagance, trying to avoid the sometimes clumsy heaviness of certain models. The briar is beautiful, served by attractive flames underlined by the stain. The base is flattened for easy stand. The stem is hand-cut from a bar of cumberland from the renowned German company SEM (“Schönberger Ebonite Manufaktur GmbH”), a leading producer of top-quality ebonite. The flock is made of Teflon (a nylon that perfectly handles temperature variations) and the shank is drilled to 4.2mm. The slot of the mouthpiece (concave-cut) is open in a V-shape for optimum draw. The briar, of Italian origin, has benefited from a year and a half of drying at the supplier’s and a further eight years in my storeroom.
