I have the great honor to propose you here a pipe whose briar was turned in the 40s in Belgium! Indeed, after my brief appearance on the television news a while ago, I had the pleasure to get in touch with the descendants of an old Antwerp pipe factory which ceased its activities shortly after the war, in 1949. This factory, which belonged to the Dierckx family, produced and marketed, among others, the Park Lane, Dirkson and Cumberland brands, and the models they made perfectly reflect the English aesthetics and classicism of the time, a style that was very much in vogue in the pipe industry of that period in Belgium and that has never gone out of fashion, as witnessed by the attraction that the Dunhill brand still enjoys today. It was a very touching moment to welcome in my modest workshop Mr Dierckx, now 94 years old, who was reminiscing about his young years in his father’s factory.
The model I am proposing here is taken from one of the many raw stummels and ebonite stems that I was lucky enough to acquire. Classic among the classics, it is the ‘Billiard’ shape, here in smooth finish. The shape is typical of those vintage models with a tight and tapered stem. The briar is cut in cross grain with thin flames on both sides. The chamber allows it to be classified as Group 4. The finish is smooth and just waxed with pure carnauba, no stain. I mounted it with an ebonite stem whose flock is cut in the mass and the shank drilled at 4.2mm. The slot of the mouthpiece (cut concave) is well open in V for an optimal draw. The briar has thus more than 73 years of drying in excellent conservation conditions !
Produced this year, it is therefore stamped ‘Tradition 2024′.
